When to Consider a Career Coach

When is the best time to look into career coaching? The easy answer to this is "any time you're considering a move in your professional life." This can mean starting your career fresh out of school, feeling stuck/unmotivated in a current role, looking to leverage your talents/abilities in a new way in your current role, or considering a job change!

A career coach is someone to give you clarity and confidence surrounding the changes you would like to see in your professional life. They can often help you expand your network, equip you with a toolkit of skills and strategies, and help build self-awareness and resilience.

Keep in mind that there are many career coaches out there, and they are not one-size-fits-all. Finding a coach can be a bit like finding a therapist, you may need to try a few out to see who you click with. Many coaches will offer a free discovery session where they will get a general idea of your goals, and present you with a basic plan on how they can help with the process. Also like with a therapist, you will need to go in with a mindset that you are ready for change and to put in the work to make it happen. Even the best coach will have a limited capacity to help if you are not ready to break through your worries and self-doubt, and remain stubborn and steadfast in your current ways.

Coaches offered on the career center portal are not directly affiliated with the associations, but have been vetted by YM Careers and will have any certifications and professional affiliations listed.
